குறள் மேல்வைப்பு வெண்பா - 18
தூது என்னும் அதிகாரத்தில் வள்ளுவர் தூதுவரின் இலக்கணங்களை விளக்குகிறார். அவற்றில் ஒரு குறள் இது;
தொகச்சொல்லித் தூவாத நீக்கி நகச்சொல்லி
நன்றி பயப்பதாம் தூது (குறள் 685)
இதன் பொருள்
தூது செல்லும் அரசனிடம் சொல்லவேண்டியவற்றை கோர்வையாக தொகுத்து , அவனுக்கு வெறுப்பு ஊட்டக்கூடிய விஷயங்களை நீக்கி , தன் இனிய சொற்களால் அவன் மனம் மகிழுமாறு கூறி , தன் தலைவனுக்கு நன்மையைத் தேடி தரவேண்டியது தூதரின் பண்பாகும்.
அவ்வை அத்தியமானுக்காக , தொண்டைமானிடம் தூது சென்ற நிகழ்வு தூதுவரின் இப்பண்பை விளக்கும். அது பற்றிய கதையும், அந்தக் கதையைத் தாங்கிய குறள் மேல்வைப்பு வெண்பாவும் இதோ !

He is an ambassador who ( in the presence of foreign rulers) , speaks briefly, avoids hardness , talks sweetly to make them smile, and thus brings good ( to his own soverign).
அவ்வை தூது சென்ற கதை

அவ்வை தூது சென்ற கதை
அவ்வை , அதியமான் அஞ்சியின் அவைப்புலவராகமட்டுமல்ல, நெருங்கிய நட்பாகவும் இருந்தார். அது மட்டுமல்லாமல், அதியனுக்கு அரசியலில் உதவி புரிந்த தூதுவராகவும் இருந்த கதை ஒன்றைக் காண்போம்.
அண்டைக் குறுநில மன்னன் தொண்டைமான், அதியன் மேல் போர் தொடுக்க ஆயத்தம் செய்துகொண்டிருப்பதாக செய்தி வந்தது. தொண்டைமான் படைப்பலத்தை அறிந்த அவ்வை , இந்தப் போரை எவ்வாறேனும் நிறுத்த எண்ணினார். இது குறித்து தொண்டைமானுக்கு தூது சென்றார். சென்றவருக்கு , தொண்டைமான், அவனுடைய படைபலத்தைக் காட்ட எண்ணி, அவ்வையைத் தன் படைக்கலன்கள் வைக்கப்பட்டிருந்த பாசறைக்கு அழைத்துச் சென்று காட்டினான். அதைக் கண்ட அவ்வையோ, கீழ்வரும் பாடலைப் பாடி அதியனின் போர்த்திறத்தை சொல்லாமல் சொல்லி, தொண்டைமானுக்கு உணர்த்தினார்!

இப்பாட்டின் கருத்து
இப்போர்க் கருவிகள் மயில் தோகை மாலை சூட்டப்பட்டுள்ளன. இவற்றின் உடற்பகுதிகளாகிய திரண்ட வலிய காம்புகள் அழகுறச் செய்யப்பட்டு உள்ளன. நெய் பூசப்பட்டுக் காவல் மிக்க அகன்ற அரண்மனைக் கண் உள்ளன. அப்போர்க் கருவிகள் (அதியமானுடையவை) பகைவரைக் குத்துதலால் கங்கும் நுனியும் முரிந்து கொல்லனது கொட்டிலில் கிடக்கின்றன. செல்வம் உண்டானபோது பிறர்க்கெல்லாம் உணவு தந்து, செல்வம் இல்லாதபோது உள்ளதனைப் பலரோடு சேர்ந்து உண்ணும் வறுமைப்பட்டவர்களின் சுற்றத்திற்குத் தலைவனாகிய எம் வேந்தனின் கூரிய நுனியையுடைய வேலும் கொல்லன் உலையை விரும்பிற்று” (நன்றி : முனைவர் திரு.கு.வே.பாலசுப்ரமணியம் ) |
அதியனை வெல்லுதல் எளிதல்ல என்பதை இப்பாடல் தொண்டைமானுக்கு உணர்த்த, போர் முடிக்கும் எண்ணத்தை அவன் கைவிட்டான்.
என்னே அவ்வையின் தூதாற்றல்!
வள்ளுவனின் இந்தக் குறளுக்கு சிறந்த எடுத்துக் காட்டு அல்லவா இது!
The Story in English
Avvaiyar was a poetess of the Sangam period and was a friend of King Adhiyaman. When a war seemed likely to break out between Adhiyaman, and King Thondaimaan Avvaiyar, went to the court of Thondaimaan, as an envoy from Adhiyamaan, to try to stop the war. She was anxious to prevent the loss of life. Tondaiman who understood the purpose of her visit, decided to show her his military might , thinking that it will persuade her to warn Adhiyamaan and make him accept Thondaimaan's leadership. He took her around and showed her the preparedness of his army and its many weapons. His idea was to impress Avvaiyar so much that she would take back a warning to her friend Adhiyaman, so that the latter would be scared of fighting Thondaimaan.
But Avvaiyar cleverly turned the tables on Thondaimaan. She said she could see that his weapons were glossy with the newly applied oil, and that his spears and swords were sharp. This was in contrast to the weapons of Adhiyaman's army. These had been blunted by cutting down enemies. They were broken because of constant use and were in the process of being repaired. She subtly conveyed that while Thondaimaan was inexperienced in battle, Adhiyaman was very experienced. The warning was that Thondaimaan had better not wage war against Adhiyaman. The message went home and thus she cleverly thwarted war between the two kings.

These are adorned with feathers of the peacock and encircled by garlands
and have strong, thick, well-fashioned shafts and are anointed with ghee
while they repose in a sprawling, well-guarded palace; but those spears,
with their blades and joints broken when they pierced enemies, are always
to be found in the blacksmith's small shed, for he who is lord
and chieftain of those who gather in need,
who grants food when there is plenty
and when there is not will share his own,
our king owns those spears that are tipped with sharp blades!
