The Story In English

The Devas and Asuraas were churning the Ocean of Milk, using Mount Meru as the stick  and the snake Vasuki as the rope . At that time , the snake Vasuki spit out a venom called Aalam and another venom known as the Kaalam rose from the milky ocean . These combined to produce the dreaded AalaKaala venom.  Fearing the venom, the Devas ran to Mount Kailash and prayed to Lord Siva. Lord Siva took pity on them and drank the venom  and  thus saved them and the universe. To prevent the  highly potent poison form getting swallowed, Devi Parvathi held the throat of Siva and made the venom stay there, thus resulting in the blue colour of Lord Sivas throat. Due to the after effects of the Aalakaala poison, Lord Siva became tired and resting on Parvathi's lap, slept for a day. This happened on a Dwadasi day. The next day, on Thrayothasi the Lord woke up at Pradosham hour and performed the Thandavam dance .

அரவின்வாய் விடுத்த ஆலம் கடலினின் றெழுந்த காலம் 
இருவிடம்  சேர்ந்து திரண்ட கருநீல ஆல காலம் 
அருந்தியே அண்டம் காத்து அயர்ந்தோர்நாள் உறங்கிப் பின்னர்    
திரயோதசிப் பிரதோஷ நேரம் திருநடம் புரிந்தான் மாதோ!
