சங்கடஹர சதுர்த்திப் பாடல் - 3 

இன்று சங்கடஹர சதுர்த்தி. இந்நாளின் மகிமை பற்றிய பல கதைகள் இருப்பினும், மிகவும் முக்கியமான ஒன்று கண்ணனைப் பற்றியது. ஸ்யமந்தகமணி என்னும் சிறந்த மணியொன்றை களவாடியதாக, கண்ணன் மேல் வீண்பழி சுமத்தப்பட்டது. நாரத முனியின் அறிவுரைப்படி, கண்ணன் சங்கடஹர சதுர்த்தி விரதத்தை மேற்கொண்டு முடிந்த்தபின் , உண்மை வெளிவந்து அப்பழி விலகியது .

இந்தக் கதையை உட்கொண்ட ஒரு சங்கடஹர சதுர்த்திப் பாடல்.

சங்கட ஹர சதுர்த்தி

மந்தக  மணி*தனையே தான்வேண்டிக் கேட்டதனால் 
நந்தனின் மகனும்தன்** நற்பேருக் கேற்பட்ட
குந்தகங்கள் தீர்ந்திடவே குறையில்லா முழுநிலவின்
பிந்திவரும் நான்காம்நாள் நல்விரத நோன்பேற்று
முந்திமுதல் கணபதியை சிந்தனையில் சீர்நிறுத்தி
வந்தித்து வந்ததனால் வந்தபழி விலகியதாம்.
இந்நாளில் நாமும் விநாயகனை வணங்கிப்பின்
சந்திரனின் பிறைநோக்கல் குறைகளையும் வழியாமே.

The Chamanthaka Mani story - an abridged version , based on various publications is given below :

Satrajith and Prasena were brothers. Satrajith got a beautiful gem called "Chamanthaka mani" from the Sun God after worshipping him for many years. The dazzling gem had many magical properties. Satrajith went to Dwarka wearing the gem around his neck.   When Krishna  asked Satrajith to give it to king Ugrasen  saying it would be safe with Him ,  Satrjith refused but gave it to his brother Prasena.  Prasena, wearing the jewel, went out hunting along with Krishna and other friends but got lost in the jungle. In the jungle , he was killed by a lion which took away the Chamanthaka mani. Later,  Jambavan , a bear,   killed the lion and gave the gem to his daughter  to play with.

Meanwhile  Krishna and his friends returned to Dwaraka after a futile search for Prasena. They all went back and informed Satrajith .  On hearing this Sathrajith got angry and doubted that Krishna might have killed his brother Prasenan  and  stolen the gem. This was believed by everybody and they blamed Krishna for having stolen the gem.

Krishna, in order to prove his innocence, gathered a search party and went into the forest. He traced the dead bodies of Prasena, the lion and following the tracks of the bear , reached Jambavan's cave where he found the gem.  There he fought with  Jambavan  for 28 days, when Jambavan, his whole body terribly weakened from the hammering of Krishna's fists, finally recognised Him as none other than an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. He immediately  surrendered  to Krishna and returned the gem.   Krishna returned  to Dwaraka ,  met Sathrajith and returned the gem to him after telling everything. Sathrajith regretted for his mistake. He gave back the gem to Krishna  requested him to accept his daughter Sathyabama . Krishna accepted Sathyabama but not  the gem.

   

Three other people Sathathanva, Akrurar, and  Krithavarmar were not happy about the marriage of Krishna and Sathyabama. They were very angry with Sathrajith. They decided to steal the gem. One night when Krishna was away from Dwaraka, they all planed and killed Sathrajith and  took  the gem. 

Krishna on hearing this returned to Dwaraka with Balarama. After hearing Krishna's arrival in Dwaraka , Sathathanva gave the gem to  Akrurar and Kiruthavarmar ane wnt away.  Krishna  caught Sathathanva and killed him, but the gem was not with him. Krishna returned empty handed on  seeing which, everybody  blamed him  for killing innocent Sathathanva.  Krishna felt very ashamed. He was worried and wept to himself. 

     

After some days Narada, the Deva Rishi came to Dwaraka , saw Krishna and asked him the reason for his sad face . Krishna told everything to Narada. Narada  adviced Krishna to keep upvaas on krishna paksha  chathurthi and do  pooja for Ganapathi in the evening duly giving arkkiya to  chandra (moon). He emphasised that it is only  Ganapathy who can solve all his problems and  give him peace. Krishna followed  Narada's advice and did the pooja sincerely . Ganapathy appeared before him and blessed him that he will be  free from all his worries and problems very soon .

   

After some days Akrurar came to Yadhava's court room and explained the truth and returned the gem to Krishna in front of everyone and told them the complete story.. Krishna took it and he  was very happy as he was able to reddem his honour.
