குறள் மேல்வைப்பு வெண்பா - 21

Restarting this series after a long, long gap. Hence I think a small recap on the format will be in order.

குறள்  மேல்வைப்பு வெண்பா  ( the Kural with a story )

Thirukkural is called Tamil Marai - meaning The Vedas in Tamil Language.

It contains 1330  Kurals.  Each Kural ,  as the name implies, is a small poem , in two lines.

The Kurals have a message for us to follow. There are stories of great men and women who have lived true to these messages.

I have taken a small step to bring out the beauty and lessons of Kurals to those who are not familiar with it / have lost touch with it.

I have composed a poem in the Venba format, in four lines. Reproducing the Kural , in its original form in the third and fourth line, in the first two lines I relate a well known story from history or recent happenings which brings out the essence of the Kural.

Also appended is an English version of the Kural ,  in poetic form, written by Rev. Pope/ Suththaananda Bharathiyar.

The Kural this time depicts the plight of the ill advised Russian war against Ukraine.

திருக்குறள்   50-ம் அதிகாரத்தில்  ( இடனறிதல்)  வரும் குறள் இது.

சிறைநலனும் சீரும் இலரெனினும் மாந்தர் 

உறைநிலத்தோ தொட்டல் அரிது.

இக்குறளின் பொருள் -

பாதுகாப்புக்கான கோட்டையும், மற்றும் பல படைச் சிறப்புகளும் இல்லாதிருப்பினும், அப்பகைவர் வாழும் நிலையான இடத்திற்குப் படையெடுத்துச் சென்று தாக்குவது எளிதான செயல் அல்ல.

பல நூற்றாண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பே குறள்  கொடுத்த இந்த அறிவுரை இன்றைக்கும் பொருந்தும் என்பதற்கு ரஷ்ய-உக்ரேனியப் போரின் இன்றைய நிலைமை ஒரு எடுத்துக்காட்டு.

இப்பாடலின் ஆங்கில மொழிபெயர்ப்பு சுத்தானந்த பாரதியார் வார்த்தைகளில் :

To face a foe at home is vain

இக்குறளை ஈற்றடிகளாகக் கொண்டு அமைக்கப்பட்ட ஒரு பலவிகற்ப இன்னிசை வெண்பா இதோ!

உக்ரேன்மேல் போர்தொடுத்த ரஷ்யப் பெரும்படைகள் 

திக்குமுக் காடுவதைக் காணுகிறோம் இன்று! 

சிறைநலனும் சீரும் இலரெனினும் மாந்தர் 

உறைநிலத்தோ தொட்டல் அரிது.
