Desire is the root of all evils -

This was the message of Gowthama Buddha, after whom is founded the religion of Buddhism.
Born as Siddharthan , a  prince of the Sakya dynasty, and brought up in great affluence without knowing what pain is , he became deeply troubled after he chanced upon  four sights which tranformed him totally - an ailing person, an old man , a dead corpse and a saint.  Realising that Life was not all pleasure, he wanted  to find out what was the root cause for these ills which plagued  every human being  during their lifetime.

In this quest ,  he walked away from all worldly pleasures , renouncing his  Kingdom , a Royal  Palace , enormous riches , a beautiful wife and child. This finally led him to the realisation that Desire is the root of all evils and one can attain immortality by giving away all desires.

Indeed , through this renunciation, he attained the blissful state and became Buddha- the great realised soul.

His teachings to humanity were

Old age, illness, and death are all forms of human suffering.

Suffering is closely linked to desire, a desire for being which leads from birth to death and involve ageing, illness, and mortality.

Suffering can be dispelled by the abandonment of all desires.

The very same message is captured in the Kural referred to in this மேல் வைய்ப்பு வெண்பா , one of the ten in the chapter titled Curbing of Desire (அவா அறுத்தல்).

The English version by Pope and its meaning :
Drive f
Drive from thy soul, desire insatiate
Straight"way is gained the moveless blissful state.

Removal of desire , whose nature it is never to be satisfied , will immediately confer a nature which can  never be changed.

The version by Suddhanandha Bharathiyar

Off with desire insatiate
You gain the native blissful state.
