குறள் மேல்வைப்பு வெண்பா - 8
After some interval , here is a Kural Mel Vaippu Venbaa, the eighth in the series , again.
I have composed a poem in the Venba format , in four lines. One Kural , in its original form , is reproduced in the third and fourth lines , while in the first two lines , I relate a well known story which brings out the essence of the Kural.
Also appended is an English version of the Kural , in poetic form, written by Rev. Pope and others.
The Kural is from the Chapter titled " Manly Effort " { ஆள்வினையுடைமை }
The story referred to is the famous story of how King Bagiratha undertook a long penance, standing on one leg for thousands of years, praying to Lord Shiva, to bring the Holy Ganges to the plains from the Himalayaas. (Ofcourse, the full story has its beginning much before his penance started and you may refer to the link below to get the complete story). The moral of the story is that if you persist in your efforts , the desired results will follow!
Read on now, for the Mel Vaippu Venbaa and the English versions of the Kural.
This is a small effort from my side to (re)expose readers to the beauty and brevity of the Tamil Marai along with the morals it teaches.
Please share it with your friends so that they may also get reacquainted with the Tamil classic.
* பகீரதன்
(ஒரு விகற்ப இன்னிசை வெண்பா)
Rev. Pope"s tenglish version :
Say Not "Tis hard, in weak, desponding hour,
For streneous effort gives prevailing power.
Suddhaanandha Barathiyaar"s version
Feel not frustrate saying "Tis hard". 611
Who tries attains striving's reward.
The Meaning :
Yield not to the feebleness which says " This is too difficult to be done " ; Labour will give the greatness (of mind) which is necessary to do it.
It is thi same focussed and consistent ffort from you that is resulting in our pleasure of reading such nice poetry. Keep going.
